Booking in your job
How long in advance to I need to book the job in?
Anyone that’s ever managed a construction project will tell you, planning is key. Even good old Winston Churchill said; “He who fails to plan is planning to fail”.
All successful building projects require effective preparation to ensure the project is properly equipped and has the right team on board so that it sticks to its desired timeline and stays within budget. When planning for a concrete pour, here’s a few things you’ll need to consider.
- Site preparation
When laying concrete, it’s essential that the site is prepared correctly. The soil/sand/rock or whatever the substrate is will need to be compacted to ensure an even surface finish. If your concreter is preparing the site, they’ll allocate additional time to allow for this prep work.
- The plan
The project manager or builder will confirm measurements, heights and levels, any reinforced steel supports, step downs or pipe locations. And site variables like access to site, drainage, tree roots etc will be considered. If trucks are required, council approval of a traffic management plan might be required.
- Getting the mix right
To avoid issues further down the track, it’s important to get the mix right. Each job requires the finest raw materials that will ensure a long-lasting, quality finish. Depending on the size of the job, the weather on the day etc, the concreter will confirm engineering specifications on the mix in terms of strength on site. The batch numbers will be timed to arrive in succession on the day.
- Consider the weather
If extreme heat or cold is forecast, your concreter will need to make allowances for setting time. And if it looks like rain on the day, they’ll need to be prepared to cover the slab, making sure it’s watertight or by making the call to not take the risk on the pour at all and a time should be re allocated for works to take place.
So…how long does all this take?
There’s a lot to think about right? The great thing is a professional concreting company can handle all of the above for you and the more experienced they are, the quicker this process will be. Because if they know all of the right questions to ask then they’ll be ready for the job when you’re all set.
Ideally, we suggest you book a quote in at least a month in advance and confirm details a couple of weeks before the concrete needs to be poured.
